What do they do

The spark plug creates a tiny spark of electricity that emits across a small gap which creates the ignition for the combustion needed to start your cars ignition. They are designed to burn off deposits from fuel additives or other contaminants. With weak or worn out spark plugs, you can have issues with cold starting or misfires during acceleration. Also, without a healthy spark plug you cannot sustain maximum power, and your vehicle can see a drop in fuel economy.

Where are they

Under the hood on the engine there should be 4 – 8 wires leading to different points on the engine compartment. The spark plugs are located at the engine end of these wires, under the plug covers. You can ask your technicians at Alta Nissan Richmond Hill and they would be happy to show you.

What happens when they’re old

By withstanding thousands of miles of extreme temperature changes and conditions. It begins to break down more and more in different ways; like “Spark plug deposit build up”. When deposits form on spark plugs from interaction with the air-fuel mixture, it can lead to pre-ignition of the fuel. That means a jerky and unreliable supply of energy for your car. Other forms of wear and tear include: Expanding (harder-to-jump gap). When a spark plug ignites, it has to travel across a gap of space in order provide the right level of combustion at the right moment. As spark plugs age, this gap widens as a result of extreme temperatures, debris and normal wear and tear. If the gap is too far apart, combustion will be erratic or ineffective.

How to know if it needs to be changed

You can tell your plugs need to be changed from some common noises heard like rattling, pinging or “knock”-like noises. Hard vehicle starts are also a tell tale sign of something not working correctly. As well as reduced performance over time and poor fuel economy compared to earlier years.

When do you usually change spark plugs

30,000 miles; however, spark plug longevity depends on the condition and type of spark plug. Copper plugs, for example, have the shortest life, while plugs made of more advanced and durable materials can provide up to four times the life of a copper spark plug. So watch for the signs of whether its still going strong or if there’s a reduced performance.
